En junio de 1994, Nicholas Barclay, un niño tejano de 13 años, desapareció sin dejar rastro. Tres años después, se reciben noticias sorprendentes sobre el caso: el chico ha sido hallado en España y afirma que ha sido torturado por sus secuestradores. Tras la inicial alegría de la familia al recuperarlo, se plantea un problema inexplicable: ¿cómo es posible que el hijo rubio de los Barclay sea ahora moreno?
