J.G. Ballard nació en Shangai en 1930, de padres ingleses, pasó dos años en un campo de concentración japonés y hoy reside en Shepperton, Middlesex, Inglaterra. En artículos aparecidos en "New Worlds" y "The Guardian" ha preconizado una ciencia-ficción más introspectiva, que examine los paisajes del tiempo, la búsqueda de la identidad, los arquetipos, los temas ontológicos (la fenomenología del universo, la existencia misma de la conciencia). La crítica lo ha comparado con Melville, Ray Bradbury, William Burroughs.
