La primera historia de ciencia-ficción de Howard Fast -Del tiempo y los gatos- aparece en marzo de 1959 en "The Magazine of Fantasy & Science-Fiction". El cronista de las rebeliones históricas se volvía así a la literatura social y científica, o -de acuerdo con la opinión de Judith Merrill- aparecía como un ejemplo más de que "el culto especializado de la ciencia-ficción está desapareciendo rápidamente, y su cualidad esencial se incorpora hoy al cuerpo mayor de la literatura", A -Del tiempo y los gatos- siguieron otros cuentos memorables, admirablemente construidos, que fueron recogidos inmediatamente por algunas de las mejores antologías del género: la selección anual de Judith Merrill, y la clásica A decade of science-fiction de Robert P. Mills. Howard (Melvin) Fast nació en 1914 en la ciudad de Nueva York. Ha escrito entre otras novelas: La última frontera (1941), El ciudadano Tom Paine (1943), Espartaco (1952), El caso Winston (1959).
