El ser y el tiempo
Con Parménides la filosofía empezó a ser realmente lo que Aristóteles definiría como filosofía primera: "existencia del ente en cuanto ente". Pero tan pronto como la mente humana trata de aprehender el ser mismo, éste se descompone en "esencia" y "existencia". Así, la historia entera de la filosofía puede interpretarse como una bimilenaria gigantomaquia entre filosofemas del primado de la esencia sobre la existencia y filosofemas del primado de la existencia sobre la esencia, entre "esencialismo" y "existencialismo". El primero llegó en Hegel a un punto tan difícil de superar dentro de su propia línea como provocativo de un nuevo existencialismo. Éste es, en efecto, el que -iniciado por Kierkegaard en los días inmediatamente posteriores a los de Hegel- reanudó luego Heidegger con El ser y el tiempo. Se trata, sin lugar a dudas, de la obra más influyente de la filosofía contemporánea. Su traducción, realizada por José Gaos con dedicación ejemplar y profundo conocimiento de tan complejos temas, constituyó un acontecimiento determinante en la información filosófica en lengua española, tanto que aún sigue siendo válida y oportuna.
