La Canción del Verdugo
Gary Gilmore saltó a los titulares de la prensa con motivo de su ajusticiamiento, en la Penitenciaría Estatal de Utah. Porque, aunque hubiese podido prestarse al largo forcejeo de las apelaciones y demás subterfugios legales para aplazar su ejecución, Gilmore prefirió la muerte a la angustiosa espera en el corredor de la muerte. El magistral relato de Mailer, basado en cientos de entrevistas, se centra en los nueve meses que empiezan el día en que Gary Gilmore sale en libertad condicional, sigue con los dos absurdos asesinatos que cometió muy pronto y termina con este nuevo «héroe americano» ante el pelotón de fusilamiento. Junto a Gilmore, poco a poco va emergiendo otro protagonista, Nicole, su amante, una joven que se enfrenta a un mundo casi tan sucio y corrupto como el de Gary. La historia de amor de estos dos marginados emergerá finalmente con una insólita pureza en medio de la sordidez circundante.
