Adiós a todo eso
Autobiografía de Robert Graves. Nostálgica y desengañada evocación de la juventud, que abarca los felices momentos de descanso en la campiña galesa y los siniestros años de escolar en un internado inglés, al tiempo que documento dramático y desmitificador de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la que el autor participó como oficial en las trincheras. Robert Graves escribió esta temprana autobiografía en 1929, poco antes de tomar la firme decisión de abandonar Inglaterra para vivir permanentemente en el extranjero, y de hecho corrigió las pruebas ya en Mallorca, la isla de sus sueños, de la que no se marcharía nunca, salvo un breve periodo durante la guerra civil española y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Adiós a todo eso, como su título indica, es una despedida, la rememoración de unos tiempos y unas experiencias dolorosos y amargos, con la voluntad de cerrar una etapa y renacer como un hombre nuevo en la sierra mallorquina. En las páginas de este prodigioso ejercicio de memoria, Graves repasa su infancia y sus infelices días escolares en el internado de Chatterhouse; sus brutales experiencias en las trincheras de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la que sirvió como joven oficial y que le dejaría una profunda huella, su desastroso matrimonio con Nancy Nicholson, pero también su emergente vocación literaria y sus encuentros con escritores como T. E. Lawrence, Siegfried Sassoon o Thomas Hardy.
