En 1865, el joven Octave Mouret llega a París dispuesto a hacer una gran fortuna aprovechando tanto sus encantos físicos como sus exquisitos modales de caballero. Seduce a cuantas mujeres considera necesario para sus fines, y así va escalando posiciones en el escalafón social. Adaptación de una novela de Émile Zola a la que Duvivier le da a la vez un toque romántico y cínico.
