Un hijo del circo
El doctor Farrokh Daruwalla, nació en Bombay en una familia de la casta parsi y enviado de mayor a estudiar medicina a Viena, es, al inicio de la novela, un ciudadano canadiense que ronda los sesenta, casado con una austriaca, y que ejerce en Toronto como cirujano ortopedista. Daruwalla, que no se siente en casa en lugar alguno, regresa regularmente a Bombay para trabajar en un hospital para niños lisiados o tullidos, para satisfacer su pasión por los circos y para tomar pruebas de sangre de los enanos que, en la India, suelen ser mayoría entre los payasos circenses, ya que su gran obsesión es poder un día llegar a corregir las malformaciones de esos pequeños seres. Daruwalla es, además, autor anónimo de guiones cinematográficos que dan vida al insólito Inspector Dhar. De ahí que, hace veinte años, fuera llamado a Goa para una consulta relacionada con dos víctimas de un asesinato. Ahora, veinte años después, Daruwalla se entera al fin de quién es el asesino.
