Los subterráneos
En San Francisco, ciudad a la que Kerouac llegó en 1953, antes de alcanzar la fama, los días y las noches son habitadas por el jazz, el alcohol y las drogas, por unos seres que cabalgan entre la desesperación absoluta y las ilusiones mas descabelladas. Ese será el escenario que enmarcará la historia de amor entre el escritor Leo Percepied (una nueva encarnación de Kerouac) y una muchacha negra, Mardou Fox, «el ángel negro, desesperado y sombrío, de este mundo subterráneo de Frisco».Los subterráneos es una de las mejores novelas de Jack Kerouac; en ella se precisa su voluntad de llevar a cabo una suerte de autobiografía literaria que será, al propio tiempo, una crónica legendaria de la generación beat. En efecto, casi todo es aquí relato autobiográfico, «fraseado» con ese inimitable estilo sincopado que aprendió escuchando en el Minton's de Nueva York a los grandes del bop. Al igual que Charlie Parker, Kerouac improvisa en torno a un tema, y escribe de la manera mas flexible, adaptándose en cada episodio a las resonancias que le sugiere el momento.
