El cierre de la mente moderna
Allan Bloom, profesor de Pensamiento Social en la Universidad de Chicago y notable traductor de Platón y de Rousseau, afirma que la crisis política y social de la Norteamérica del siglo xx tiene realmente sus raíces en una crisis intelectual: Exponiendo la falta de objetivos de la Universidad, el fracaso en el aprendizaje por parte de los estudiantes, así como la suplantación de la razón por la "creatividad", Blook demuestra cóm la democracia americana ha incorporado conceptos europeos, tales como el nihilismo, el existencialismo y un relativismo disfrazado de tolerancia. Según Bloom, hoy día la juventud está falta de una comprensión del pasado y de una visión del futuro, vive en un presente empobrecido. Las universidades norteamericanas, confiadas en su sistema educativo, ya no proporcionan los conocimientos de filosofía y literatura que hicieron comprender antes a los estudiantes el orden de la Naturaleza y el lugar del hombre dentro del mismo. La educación superior no consigue despertar ni nutrir el autoconocimiento que siempre ha sido la base para una enseñanza seria y humana. El cierre de la mente moderna, es un profundo análisis de las corrientes intelectuales de nuestro siglo, esencial para la comprensión del malestar espiritual de Norteamérica qeu afecta a todo nuestro mundo.
