El yo dividido
El presente libro de R.D. Laing tiene como base un hecho concreto: la comprensión cabal de la locura y del proceso de perder la razón. El autor desarrolla su obra en dos direcciones: por un lado, se dirige a los especialistas que, familiarizados con el fenómeno, tal vez no estén del todo habituados a ver a sus pacientes como individuos, sino que los reducen a casos; por el otro, intenta llegar a las personas no especializadas que, familiarizadas con los esquizoides y los esquizofrénicos, no los consideran material clínico. Teniendo en cuenta esa doble dirección, el resultado será -dice el autor- un tanto insatisfactorio para unos y otros.Laing, plenamente consciente de ello, nos entrega en este trabajo, más que la teoría de la esquizofrenia o su experiencia personal con algunos pacientes, una interpretación de la locura desde el punto de vista fenomenológico existencial, que "trata de caracterizar la naturaleza de la experiencia que una persona tiene de su mundo y de sí misma". El yo dividido se presenta en tres partes: la primera es una introducción que contiene la orientación fundamental del libro; las dos restantes se refieren a la conciencia del yo y su relación con el mundo, tanto desde su forma esquizoide, como psicótica (esquizofrénica). Se estudia, asimismo, la transición de un estado a otro y la relación entre ambos.
