El señor Polly, fiel reflejo del autor, soporta en su interior una permanente lucha por compaginar su espíritu bohemio, que le impulsa a seguir las más disparatadas aventuras, y su adscripción a un sistema social burgués muy rígido, que le coarta. Lector infatigable, amante de la naturaleza, recreador de las más extrañas aventuras, cuando decide cambiar su vida y alejarse de los impedimentos sociales, reflexiona sobre lo que sabe de sí mismo. La humanidad sin límites del personaje hacen de esta novela un inolvidable canto a la vida, con todo lo que ésta tiene de tragedia y de genuina experiencia.Herbert George Wells (Bromley, Gran Bretaña, 1866-1946). Periodista, ensayista y novelista mundialmente conocido por sus obras de ciencia ficción. Obras La máquina del tiempo y La guerra de los mundos.H. G. Wells es un maestro de la caricatura y de la crítica social, figura fundamental para conocer las corrientes del pensamiento occidental del primer tercio del siglo XX.La novela está impregnada de un sutil humor y recoge algunas de las experiencias vitales más importantes de su autor.Escrita entre 1909 y 1910, es la primera vez que se publica en castellano.
