El candidato ideal parece ser el último descendiente del reinado de Carlomagno, Pipino Arnulfo Héristal, un modesto rentista que lleva una cómoda y apacible existencia dedicado a su gran afición, la astronomía. El único problema es que Pipino no desea ser rey. A regañadientes, acepta la corona. No tardará en darse cuenta de que su papel es el de mero comparsa en el tráfago de intrigas políticas de París, lo que no le impedirá intentar lo imposible: ser el rey de todos los franceses y propiciar un cambio profundo de las caducas estructuras de ese reino improvisado.El breve reinado de Pipino IV es posiblemente la novela más gamberra y delirante de John Steinbeck (California, 1902-Nueva York, 1968), una sátira mordaz y despiadada del poder y la corrupción política por la que desfilan una serie de personajes dibujados con mano maestra: la hija del rey, Clotilde Héristal, existencialista y caprichosa; su novio Tod, vástago de una acaudalada familia norteamericana de criadores de pollos; el tío Charlie, simpático bon vivant que se dedica a la venta de cuadros falsos; y, por supuesto, el propio Pipino, un héroe por accidente, un monarca idealista que recorre el país de incógnito y a lomos de una Vespa para comprobar en persona las condiciones de vida de sus súbditos. Llena de situaciones cómicas y absurdas, El breve reinado de Pipino IV representa la veta más divertida y cáustica del narrador californiano, Premio Nobel de Literatura en 1962 y autor de obras inolvidables como Las uvas de la ira, Al este del edén o Tortilla Flat, publicada en esta misma colección.
