Nos sentimos orgullosos del rescate de Los ejércitos de la noche, uno de los mejores libros de la literatura americana de las últimas décadas. En septiembre de 1967, alguien llamó a Norman Mailer para invitarle a participar en una marcha de protesta contra la guerra del Vietnam que se iba a realizar al mes siguiente en Washington. La idea había surgido de Jerry Rubin, Abbie Hoffman y otros activistas del Youth International Party, pero en aquel anti-ejército que marcharía sobre el Pentágono el 21 de octubre de 1967 estarían representados todos los grupos de la vieja y la nueva izquierda americana, hippies, yipppies, weathermen, cuáqueros, critianos, feministas y diversas tribus urbanas y suburbanas.Mailer aceptó con renuencia. Ya tenía cuarenta y cuatro años y, a pesar de su bien ganada fama de provocador y disidente, tanto en la literatura como en la vida, tenía contradictorios sentimientos con respecto a la guerra y quizá también más cosas que perder que «esas generaciones que creían en la tecnología, pero también en el LSD, en las brujas, en la sabiduría tribal, en la orgía y en la revolución». Mailer, junto con otras estrellas americanas de la época, fue, vio, participó, sufrió en carne propia la represión y escribió luego uno de los libros más descarnados e inteligentes sobre la década de los sesenta, sus mitos, sus héroes y sus demonios: «La biblia del Movemente», en palabras de Jerry Rubin.
