Saga de Nial
Considerada la mejor de las sagas islandesas por su extensión y valores literarios, la Saga de Nial es además una obra que, por su cercanía estilística a la novela moderna, despojada de ropajes retóricos, resulta de pasionante lectura aún hoy en día, como lo ha sido sin interrupción desde que fuera redactada en el siglo XIII por un autor desconocido. Con su magistral fusión de lo histórico, lo legendario y lo puramente inventado que caracteriza a las sagas, encontramos un reflejo apasionante de la realidad histórica de Islandia, a la vez que algunas de las preocupaciones eternas del ser humano. La inteligencia y la reflexión, personificadas en el sabio Nial, así como el necesario predominio de las leyes, se oponen a la violencia como forma de solucionar los problemas humanos, tema que era central en la Islandia medieval y que todavía sigue siéndolo. Pero lejos de los planteamientos alegóricos o ideológicos, tan frecuentes en la literatura medieval, y de las aventuras más o menos fantásticas de este relato, la Saga de Nial enraíza con los problemas de la vida diaria de las personas, que, incluso hoy, nos parecen de carne y hueso setecientos años después de la redacción de esta obra. Enrique bernárdez es catedrático de Filología Inglesa en la universidad Complutense de Madrid. Aparte de sus libros publicados sobre gramática y lingüística, ha realizado numerosos estudios y traducciones de la literatura nórdica medieval y también moderna.
