The Fever was first performed by Wallace Shawn for private audiences in 1990. Soon after, in 1991, it was awarded the prestigious Best New American Play Off-Broadway (Obie) Award by New York’s Village Voice consecrating him as a major fringe playwright. The Fever reiterates and expands on ideas already emerging in Shawn’s earlier plays: the origins of poverty, the production of misery and injustice on a global scale, the searing contrasts between the everyday lives of privileged urbanites and the wretched existence of most humans on the planet. [...] The contrasts between the luxuries of the Global North – the cozy life of the mind, the individual pleasures of a member of the intellectual set – emphasize the neglected, impoverished reality of the mass populations he encounters in his travels throughout the Global South. Privileged culpability focuses the agonic speech of this American who has ventured south. In this encounter of the Global South by the Global North, the security of borders and wealth cave in; an entire state seemingly devoted to protecting its privileged few – the 1% who grind down the 99% left behind both at home and abroad – has vanished.
