Armas y el hombre: Un clásico de la literatura universal
La acción tiene lugar en 1885, durante la guerra entre Bulgaria y Serbia. En el primer acto, Raina, una joven búlgara, se entera por su madre de que su novio, Sergio, un valiente oficial, ha obtenido una victoria con una espléndida carga de caballería. Poco tiempo después, por la ventana entra uno de los enemigos fugitivos, el capitán Bluntschli, un suizo que, movido por un espíritu aventurero, se ha embarcado en la vida militar combatiendo en las filas serbias. Con un arma (descargada), le dice a Raina que la esconda. La joven, al verlo muerto de hambre, se compadece de él, le da chocolate y, para ayudarlo a escapar, le presta la capa de su padre, el mayor Petkoff. En el segundo acto, el padre y el novio, después de la guerra, regresan a casa. Han conocido a Bluntschli, cuya experiencia militar valoran, y cuando llega para devolver el abrigo (y volver a ver a Raina), es bienvenido; mientras que los dos oficiales búlgaros encargados de preparar la marcha y abastecer a ciertos regimientos no sabían qué hacer, Bluntschli los ayudaba con su sentido práctico.En el último acto, Sergio, por una serie de circunstancias, entre otras por la indiscreción de la camarera de Raina, Lonka, a quien está cortejando, descubre que Bluntschli, cuando estaba herido, pasó una noche en la habitación de Raina. Casi no se produjo un duelo; pero los hechos se aclaran y cuando Bluntschli se entera de la noticia de la muerte de su padre, un riquísimo dueño de muchos hoteles, se dispone a regresar a su país natal. Pero Raina, ofendida por la infidelidad de Sergio, prefiere a Bluntschli, su "soldado de chocolate" y se compromete con él. El autor ha querido oponer el heroísmo y la técnica que lo reemplaza, el idealismo guerrero y la realidad de los servicios logísticos que son los verdaderos vencedores de las campañ en definitiva, satirizar la concepción romántica de la guerra. El motivo controvertido vuelve un tanto cómicas las actitudes de los personajes y las paradojas del autor no siempre resultan convincentes; pero el vigor del diálogo y la actuación escénica dan vida a la comedia que fue muy popular.
