La corbeta Gloria Scott
Esta historia transcurre entre los años 1875-1879. Es el primer caso de Sherlock Holmes, quien era un joven estudiante, y en aquel entonces no conocía a Watson, y precisamente durante esta investigación, él se da cuenta que puede convertir su hobby en una profesión, dedicándose a trabajar como investigador privado. Al respecto, a Holmes le interesa que Watson registre esta historia en su archivo, y a diferencia de la gran mayoría de los relatos del canon holmesiano, en los cuales Watson es el narrador, esta vez el detective asume el control de la narración.Holmes pasa sus vacaciones fuera de Londres, en el hogar de su amigo Víctor Trevor, y el padre, un acaudalado minero se sorprende y está incómodo por las grandes habilidades de deducción de Sherlock Holmes, quien decide irse para no molestarlo, pero, antes ellos reciben la visita de un excéntrico marinero, llamado Hudson. Un tiempo después, Víctor Trevor le pide a Holmes que regrese porque su padre se está muriendo y durante ese mes, en que el marinero trabajó como jardinero y luego mayordomo de la mansión, antes de irse, abusó de su confianza y convirtió sus vidas en un infierno.El valiente Holmes regresa a la residencia de los Trevor.
