Prefacio a Shakespeare
En 1765 aparecía la edición a cargo de Samuel Johnson de las obras de Shakespeare, y con el prefacio que abría la serie de ocho volúmenes se iniciaba la lectura crítica moderna de uno de los genios literarios más celebrados de todos los tiempos. Johnson, crítico impecable y a su vez autor prolífico, trazó los caminos que todavía hoy guían nuestra lectura —incesante y siempre renovada— de Shakespeare: en primer lugar, que el autor de Hamlet fue ante todo un hombre de teatro (dramaturgo y actor), atento a la relación entre la acción escénica y la reacción del público; en segundo lugar, que sus personajes no son héroes de corte clásico, son hombres que actúan como lo haría el lector —o el espectador— si estuviera en su situación. Y en tercer lugar —y el más importante—, más que un autor estrechamente vinculado a sus contemporáneos, Shakespeare trasciende en este ensayo las fronteras de su tiempo y se erige como contemporáneo de la posteridad.
