Un sueño de paz: La lucha de una mujer liberiana por cambiar su destino y el de su país
En medio de un clima de guerra y terror Leymah Gbowee alentó a las mujeres liberianas a permanecer unidas; juntas condujeron a su nación hacia la paz. Ésta es su historia. La vida de la joven Leymah Gbowee se rompió cuando se desató en Liberia una cruenta guerra civil, un conflicto brutal que destrozó su vida y que significó la muerte de muchos parientes y amigos. Fueron muchos años de continuas luchas que destruyeron no sólo su país sino que le arrebataron la esperanza y los sueños que tenía de niña. Al igual que las esposas jóvenes de su país se vio inmersa en un clima doméstico también de violencia y en el cuidado de sus hijos, y a pesar de su situación reunió el coraje necesario para transformar su amargura en acción al darse cuenta de que eran las mujeres las que más sufrían en este tipo de conflictos y que sólo en ellas, unidas, residía el poder para trazar un camino de esperanza que las llevara a ella y a sus familias hacia la paz. En 2003 la pasión y el carisma de Gbowee hicieron posible el movimiento Acción en Masa Liberiana por la Paz, una coalición de mujeres que salió a la calle para manifestarse en contra de la guerra y que puso en jaque a los hombres al organizar la primera huelga sexual de la historia reciente. Un grupo de mujeres convencidas de que la unión era el único camino, su última esperanza para alcanzar la paz. Ésta es la historia de Leymah y de todas las mujeres que se atrevieron a decir basta.
